Description
As a creative outlier, Lindsey Renee Derry travels to the distant fringes with Remote Body where she finds the unusual, the glamorous, the dark, and the hilarity all to exist within her isolation. Through this, she reveals how isolation can be both a lonely and liberating experience.
*Remote Body was commissioned by MODAFE, Korea’s International Modern Dance Festival, and mentored by KT Nelson, Co-Artistic Director of ODC/Dance, via RoundAntennae.
Creative Insights
Sparked by Stanislavsky’s method acting where the actor aspires complete emotional identification with a part, I set out to become a true outlier during the creation of Remote Body. Already a natural introvert living in the San Francisco suburbs, it didn’t take much to establish the conditions. Transforming my living room into a dance studio, I choreographed at home, in a place that triggered the actual experience of separateness. This freed me from having to portray isolation, the theme of Remote Body, allowing me to create from the experience/embodiment of it instead.
For the video projection, I discreetly shot scenes in Korean and Japanese hotels at odd hours to capture my experience of solitude. I experimented with placing private moments in public settings as a way of juxtaposing the emotional isolation I experienced. The video is projected on stage in the middle of Remote Body.
